Devo on Vinyl

Devo are an American new wave band formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, known for their angular sound, synthesizers, and satirical take on consumer culture and modern society. Emerging from the art-punk scene, they developed a distinctive style that combined nervy guitars, electronic textures, rigid rhythms and deliberately unconventional songwriting. Their debut album, ‘Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!’ (1978), established their offbeat approach, while ‘Freedom of Choice’ (1980) brought a more polished synth-pop sound and the hit single ‘Whip It’. Across albums such as ‘Duty Now for the Future’ and ‘New Traditionalists’, Devo balanced catchy melodies with absurdist humour and a sharp critique of conformity. Their matching outfits, energy-dome hats and unmistakable visual identity became as influential as their music, helping make them one of the most distinctive bands of the new wave era.
