Stereolab’s independent label, Duophonic, is set to release remastered editions of their classic albums on February 28th.

Founded in 1990 by London-based Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the band quickly developed a dreamy French allure that set them apart from other artists in the nineties. Stereolab is widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands of the 1990s, influencing artists such as Tame Impala, Sufjan Stevens, and Beach House. Their music consistently featured socio-political lyrics, adding an intellectual depth that made their sound instantly recognizable. By releasing their albums independently, they maintained full creative control, allowing them to experiment freely without compromise.

The seven albums set for rerelease have been remastered from the original tapes at Calyx in Berlin under the supervision of Stereolab’s Tim Gane, as announced on the Duophonic label website. Their timeless sound is shaped by a rich mix of influences, including:

  • Krautrock pioneers like Neu! and Can, are known for their hypnotic, motorik rhythms.

  • French avant-garde artists such as Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg, bringing melodic sophistication.

  • Minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Terry Riley, whose experimental structures echo throughout their music.
