Ella Thompson - Triumph and Sadness

Ella Thompson’s Triumph & Sadness is a soulful and timeless album, inspired by classic sweet soul and shaped by Melbourne’s vibrant independent music scene. Recorded direct-to-tape in rural Victoria, it captures the band’s raw live energy.

Co-written with Liam McGorry, the album also features contributions from Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo. Released via Mr Bongo (UK) and College of Knowledge (AUS/NZ), the album combines vulnerability, philosophical depth, and emotional honesty.

Thompson’s influences range from Renée Geyer and Nina Simone to Curtis Mayfield and Patti Smith. She explores connection, impermanence, and the paradoxes of modern life. Tracks such as “Promise to Keep,” “Change of Heart,” “My Weakness,” and “Dandelion” showcase the breadth of her lyrical range.

Following Domino (2023) and Ripple on the Wing (2024), Triumph & Sadness is her most profound work to date.
