Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay

This is a classic from Freddie Hubbard’s repertoire. The musicians joining him on this musical journey are Herbie Hancock on Fender Rhodes, Ron Carter on electric and acoustic bass, Lenny White on drums, and Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone and alto flute.

“Red Clay” is accessible, groove-driven, and one of the early fusions of R&B and funk with post-bop. The song was inspired by Hubbard’s memories of growing up in Indianapolis. He noted that many residents in his neighborhood had come from the Deep South, and he wanted the track to evoke images of the red clay found there.

This album absolutely belongs alongside the other great music from that era.
