Info

With Ballads, John Coltrane demonstrates how he could make familiar repertoire entirely his own. While his period with Impulse! Records is often associated with groundbreaking albums such as A Love Supreme and Ascension, this release reveals a more restrained side of his artistry. Together with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones, Coltrane approaches classic standards with care, energy, and a distinctive musical voice. Thanks to the direct approach in the studio, the performances retain a spontaneous quality, making familiar songs sound fresh and vibrant once again. Ballads underscores Coltrane’s versatility as a bandleader and his ability to give a wide range of material renewed expressive power.
