41 Longfield Street Late '80s is a collaborative album by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and William Tyler, in which two worlds collide: experimental electronics and meditative guitar music. The album grew out of their shared love of American country and folk music from the 1980s, such as Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith, an influence passed on to them by their fathers.
The production method is unique: Tyler plays his guitar improvisations live in the studio, often in Los Angeles, after which Hebden digitally deconstructs these recordings and transforms them into a futuristic yet nostalgic sound. You hear recognizable guitars blending with richly layered IDM sounds and subtle ambient nuances; the result is a warm and melancholic soundscape reminiscent of road trips, late nights, and old radio stations.
Their repertoire includes a contemporary cover of "If I Had a Boat," which interweaves familiar Americana with electronic effects, and original compositions like "Spider Ballad," where Tyler's guitar soars in a psychedelic IDM environment. The record is intended as an ode to their youth and the music their fathers played, but it extends that homage with a forward-looking perspective and open production, so that every listen reveals something new.
