Lamb of God’s tenth album, Into Oblivion, shows the band fully embracing their status as musical veterans: owing nothing to anyone, with nothing left to prove. As such, Into Oblivion is an album that simultaneously nods to LOG’s roots, amplifies their signature groove, and explores new sonic territory.

Ask vocalist Randy Blythe why the band chose to call their tenth album Into Oblivion and he doesn’t mince words: “Because that’s where we’re headed,” he says. “The album is generally about the ongoing and rapid erosion of the social contract, particularly here in America. Things that would have shocked people twenty years ago are now considered acceptable.” Blythe also examines the underlying factors of personal responsibility. “People’s increasing inability to accept uncertainty in their own lives has led them to look for someone who says, ‘Everything will be fine as long as you believe in me. I have all the answers. I alone can fix it,’” Blythe says. “There is a willing surrender of agency and responsibility.”

Into Oblivion, produced by the band’s longtime collaborator Josh Wilbur, was recorded in three different studios across the country. The drums were tracked at The Bakery in Richmond. Guitars and bass were recorded in guitarist Mark Morton’s home studio in Virginia. Vocals were recorded at Total Access, the legendary studio in Redondo Beach, California, where Black Flag’s My War and groundbreaking albums by Hüsker Dü, Descendents, and Saint Vitus were also recorded. “When I walked in, I immediately felt at home because I felt that punk rock history—the world I come from,” Blythe says enthusiastically.

Ultimately, all of these elements—the music, the recording process, the lyrical themes, and the band’s own creative goals—came together in what you hear on Into Oblivion.
