Rarely has a soundtrack been as defining for a film as this one, first released in 1958 by Fontana Records in Europe and Columbia Records in the United States. The conflicting stories about how Miles Davis created the soundtrack have become part of its legend. Nearly seven decades later, beyond the myth, this tight, feverish recording—filled with intense dramatic tension—remains one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time, and one of the few jazz soundtracks to be entirely improvised.
