Sonny Landreth - Bound By The Blues

Sonny Landreth’s album Bound By The Blues, now available again on vinyl, marks a return to the slide guitarist’s musical roots. It presents a bold, big-sounding collection of recordings that rise to stratospheric heights of jazz-inspired improvisation, draw on the best of classic rock, and remain inevitably deeply connected to the elemental emotional and compositional structures that form the historical core of the blues.

Bound By The Blues is a powerful tribute to the durability and flexibility of the genre, as well as to Landreth’s own creative vision. Along the way, Sonny name-checks figures such as Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, and some of his other musical heroes. He also pays homage to fellow slide guitarist Johnny Winter with the instrumental “Firebird Blues.” He reimagines a number of outstanding covers, including Robert Johnson’s “Walkin’ Blues” and Elmore James’s “Dust My Broom.”

Landreth continues to develop his vision and musical voice, with ever more original and distinctive sounds ranging from blues, zydeco, folk, and country to jazz, making Bound By The Blues one of his most ambitious albums to date.
