Fear (1974) was the first of three John Cale albums released by Island Records, all within a span of just over a year. During this period, Cale also produced for other artists and worked on albums like Horses by Patti Smith, one of the most influential proto-punk records. In addition to providing lead vocals on Fear, Cale played keyboards, guitars, viola, violin, and bass. He was joined by Richard Thompson, Roxy Music's Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, and other artists signed to Island. The track "Gun" features an unusual two-man guitar solo by Manzanera and Eno, with Eno using a synthesizer to process Manzanera's guitar playing in real time!
