Info
Diamond is the second studio album by the British band Spandau Ballet, released in 1982. The album is rooted in new wave and synthpop, with strong influences from post-punk and white funk, and takes a step further toward atmospheric, club-oriented sounds while retaining the stylish, fashion-conscious aesthetic that was so characteristic of the early-1980s London scene.
The production is polished and expansive, with an emphasis on keyboards, saxophone lines, and rhythmic guitar textures that provide a tight, sophisticated backdrop for Tony Hadley’s dramatic vocals. The album captures the band at a transitional stage, moving from their earlier, harder-edged club roots toward a more polished, mainstream-ready sound that nevertheless remains steeped in the icy, avant-garde atmosphere of the New Romantic movement.
On Diamond, the band experiments with longer songs, cinematic arrangements, and a mood that shifts between hedonistic nightclub cool and introspective romance. Overall, it forms a bridge between Spandau Ballet’s underground beginnings and their later, chart-friendly pop, offering a snapshot of new wave and synthpop as they were evolving in real time in the early 1980s.
