The Fall were an English post-punk band formed in Manchester in 1976. The band existed in various line-ups over the years and was essentially built around founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. Initially associated with the late-1970s punk movement, the group’s music underwent several stylistic changes over time, but is often characterized by a raw, guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, always underpinned by Smith’s distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics. The band was known for its extraordinary productivity: they released more than 25 studio albums, and more than three times that number if live albums and other releases are included. They never achieved major mainstream success, apart from a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but they did maintain a strong cult following. The band was closely associated for many years with BBC DJ John Peel, who supported them early in their career and called The Fall his favorite band, famously saying: “They are always different; they are always the same.”
